    Description

    Azee® manufacturer is Cipla. Azee® active ingredient Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic belonging to the azalide group.

    Indications:

    - acute otitis media caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptococcus pneumoniae;

    - sinusitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis or Streptococcus pneumoniae;

    - acute bronchitis caused by Chlamydia pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Streptococcus pneumoniae;

    - community-acquired pneumonia due to Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Streptococcus pneumoniae in patients appropriate for oral therapy;

    - uncomplicated skin and soft tissues infections (e.g. furunculosis, pyoderma and impetigo due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae);

    - uncomplicated genital infections (in adolescents and older children) (e.g., urethritis and cervicitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis).

    Azee® is used as an alternative to first-line therapy of pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, in individuals who cannot use first-line therapy.

    Azee® is not effective against viral infections (e.g. common cold. flu) and yeast infections.

    MOA (mechanism of action):

    Azithromycin has bacteriostatic, antimicrobial effect. It inhibits the biosynthesis of RNA-dependent proteins, required by bacteria for the growth and replication. Therefore, Azithromycin stops the spread of infection and remaining bacteria eventually die.

    Dosage

    Azee® tablets can be taken with or without food. Azee® tablets should be taken with half a glass of water.

    Adults, children weighing over 45 kg.

    The recommended dose: 500 mg as a single dose on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily on the second day through 5 days. Alternatively, 500 mg once daily for 3 days.

    For acute bacterial sinusitis: 500 mg once daily for 3 days.

    For genital ulcer disease (chancroid), non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis: one single dose 1000 mg.

    For gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis: one single dose 2000 mg.

    For Chlamydia: one single dose 1000 mg.

    Children, adolescents weighing under 45 kg.

    The Azee® tablets are not recommended. Young people with a body weight of less than 45 kg should use other forms of Azithromycin administration.

    Missing a dose

    If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Azee® to compensate the missed dose.

    Overdose

    If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

    Storage

    Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

    Do not take Azee® if you are allergic to Azithromycin Dihydrate, Erythromycin or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.

    Do not take Azee® if you are allergic to any of the other ingredients comprised in Azee®.

    Do not take Azee® if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

    Do not take Azee® if you have severe liver or kidney problems.

    Do not take Azee® if you have severe heart problems or problems with your heartbeat (QT syndrome).

    Do not take Azee® if your blood levels of potassium or magnesium are too low.

    Do not take Azee® if you develop signs of another infection.

    Do not take Azee® if you are taking any ergot derivatives such as Ergotamine (to treat migraine).

    Do not take Azee® if you have a certain type of muscle weakness called Myasthenia Gravis.

    Do not take Azee® if you have nervous (neurological) or mental (psychiatric) problems.

    Consult your doctor before taking Azee® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

    Azee® is not recommended for using people weighing under 45 kg.
