    Active Ingredient:

    Ampicillin, Sulbactam

    Description

    Sulbacin® is produced by Unichem.

    Sulbacin® comprises Ampicillin and Sulbactam as raw materials. Ampicillin is an extended-spectrum 3nd generation Aminopenicillin (drug class Penicillins). Ampicillin is beta-lactamase sensitive. Sulbactam is a synthetic beta-lactamase inhibitor, used alongside Ampicillin to protect it from being wiped out by bacteria.

    Indications:

    - upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis, otitis media and tonsillitis;

    - lower respiratory tract infections including bacterial pneumonias and bronchitis;

    - urinary tract infections and pyelonephritis;

    - skin and soft tissue infections;

    - bacterial septicemia;

    - bone and joint infections;

    - gonococcal infections;

    - intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis, cholecystitis, endometritis and pelvic cellulitis;

    - gynecological infections.

    Sulbacin® may also be indicated in patients requiring Sulbactam/Ampicillin therapy following initial treatment with Sulbacin® Injection.

    MOA (mechanism of action):

    Ampicillin is a cell-wall inhibitor, that kills the bacteria by attacking the cell wall. Namely, it hinders the synthesis of peptidoglycan, which is vital for survival of bacteria in the human body. Sulbactam in its turn binds to beta-lactamases and inactivates them, thereby protecting Ampicillin, that is normally substrate for these enzymes. Thus, the activity of Ampicillin is enhanced if used in conjunction with Sulbactam.

    Ampicillin acts as antimicrobial agent against Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyrogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterococcus faecalis.

    Dosage

    Sulbacin® tablets are taken orally on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes to one hour before meals.

    Duration of therapy is normally for 5-14 days, but the treatment period may be extended if necessary.

    Adults and the elderly

    For most bacterial infections: 375-750 mg twice daily.

    For uncomplicated Gonorrhea: six 375 mg tablets. Concomitant probenecid 1 g should be administered in order to prolong plasma concentrations of Sulbactam and Ampicillin.

    Children

    For most bacterial infections:

    children weighing up to 30 kg are given usual adult dose;

    children weighing more than 30 kg are given 25-50 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses depending on the severity of the infection.

    In both adults and children, treatment is usually continued until 48 hours after pyrexia and other abnormal signs have resolved.

    The dosage may be reduced in patients with severe kidney failure.

    Missing a dose

    If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Sulbacin® to compensate the missed dose.

    Overdose

    If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

    Storage

    Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.
