    Active Ingredient:

    Nitrofurantoin

    Description

    Uribid® manufacturer is Intas Pharmaceuticals.

    Uribid® active ingredient Nitrofurantoin is a broad spectrum antibacterial agent, that is especially active against the majority of urinary pathogens. Nitrofurantoin is an urinary antiseptic (or synthetic urinary tract antiseptic).

    Indications:

    - treating urinary tract infections caused by bacteria (e.g., acute cystitis);

    - preventing UTIs in people who get recurrent infections;

    - preventing UTIs in people having a surgical procedure on the bladder or urinary tract.

    Uribid® is not indicated for the treatment of pyelonephritis, prostatitis and intra-abdominal abscess, because of extremely poor tissue penetration and low blood levels.

    MOA (mechanism of action):

    Nitrofurantoin shows a good activity against E. coli, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Coagulase negative staphylococci, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Citrobacter species, Klebsiella species, Bacillus subtilis species.

    When Nitrofurantoin is taken by mouth, kidneys filters its high levels out of the blood and forwards into the urine. This allows Nitrofurantoin concentrate among the bacteria in urinary tract. Nitrofurantoin enters bacteria cells and damages their genetic material (DNA). This leaves the bacteria unable to restore themselves or to multiply and so bacteria die. The infection is cleared up.
